Liberty County

Liberty County, bisected by the Trinity River, was formed and organized in 1836 in the new Republic of Texas. Historically, the City of Liberty (the county seat) is the third oldest municipality in Texas, and the entire area is rich in heritage and historical sites. Sam Houston , William B. Travis, and David G. Burnett all practiced law in Liberty. The Sam Houston Regional Library & Research Center here, is a historical depository of the 10 counties originally carved from the Atascosito Liberty District of the Republic of Mexico.

The Liberty Bell Tower, located on the grounds of the Geraldine D. Humphreys Cultural Center, proudly houses a replica of the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, PA, cast from the original pattern and molding pit by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England. But this bell isn't cracked! It tolls on special occasions.

The northern fourth of the county is part of the Big Thicket, a once-impenetrable wooded wilderness. Almost 50 percent of the land is considered prime farmland. Today, beef cattle, goats, rice, hay, grain sorghum, corn and soybeans are produced commercially.

Liberty County is home to 70,154 of the kindest, friendliest, hardest working folks anywhere. Proximity to Houston, lower cost of living, great schools, and world-class hospitality of communities like Cleveland, Dayton, and Liberty make Liberty County a wonderful place to raise a family or locate a business.

In 1999, through the Texas Community Futures Forum, Liberty County residents identified the major needs that affect their family, friends, and themselves. The top five needs identified were economic development, post-secondary education opportunities, environmental concerns, community activities for youth, and social, and basic and economic issues for the elderly. Progress has been made in each of these areas through various Extension Program committees: Beef & Forage, Crops, 4-H & Youth, Family & Consumer Sciences, and the Liberty County Extension Program Council.
